President of Uzbekistan Explores Ways to Boost Entrepreneurship and Export Activities

in Economy / Uzbekistan - by

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan reviewed proposals to enhance entrepreneurs' activities and engage them in exports on March 12th, as reported by the state's press service. The necessity of this initiative was highlighted during a video conference on December 18, 2023. New approaches were developed based on entrepreneurs' suggestions and expert input.

Last year, export-oriented enterprises received assistance totaling 665 billion sums, enabling exports worth 3.2 billion dollars. However, some sectors and regions did not effectively utilize these funds. Industries such as electrical engineering, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and jewelry fell short of average export levels. Sector associations failed to support 2709 potential exporters.

In response, plans are underway to integrate production, industrial zones, and exports into a unified system. It is proposed to transfer 12 sectoral and industrial associations to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry. This shift aims to transfer project support and export matters from the state to entrepreneurs' self-governing organization.

This move is expected to streamline decision-making processes, address entrepreneurs' concerns, and enhance collaboration among entrepreneurs. A Trade Development Company will replace existing agencies and funds, attracting qualified designers, technologists, and marketers to align domestic products with international standards. This company will support exporters in entering new markets and promoting national brands abroad, offering subsidies and other forms of support based on entrepreneurs' sustainability ratings.

Additionally, cooperation between the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the joint-stock company "Uzbekexpertiza" will be strengthened. Project offices supporting entrepreneurs will be established in each district.

President Mirziyoyev emphasized the importance of assessing associations' functions and performance criteria, enhancing the qualifications of their leaders and staff, and organizing predominantly regional activities. He stressed the active involvement of entrepreneurs in developing new projects and exports.

Officials presented plans to increase the local industry's export volume to 12 billion dollars this year.
