Kyrgyzstan Boosts Solar Power with IFC Partnership for Energy Projects

in Economy / Kyrgyzstan - by

Ministry of Energy and Ministry of Economy and Commerce have signed an agreement with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) at the International Energy Investment Forum in Vienna for the implementation of two solar power station projects, as reported by the Ministry of Economy's press service.

The possibility of locating new power stations in the Batken and Talas regions is being explored. This agreement marks the continuation of the collaboration between the Kyrgyz government and IFC in developing a solar power station park with a total capacity of up to 500 megawatts. The project aims to increase the utilization of renewable energy potential to meet the growing demand for electricity.

In the initial stages of the partnership, IFC assisted in conducting a comprehensive analysis and structuring a pilot project for a solar power station with a capacity of 100-150 megawatts in the Kochkor district of the Naryn region. Currently, an international competition is underway to attract private investors.

Furthermore, with the assistance of IFC, the Ministry of Energy and Ministry of Economy and Commerce are structuring a project based on a public-private partnership (PPP) model for the construction and operation of solar power stations in the Batken and Talas regions.

These projects contribute to the increase in domestic electricity production, diversification of energy sources, and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. They align with Kyrgyzstan's energy sector development strategy until 2035 and the growing need for renewable energy development.
