Revolutionizing Agriculture in Kyrgyzstan: From Saffron Cultivation to Soil Analysis

in Economy / Kyrgyzstan - by

Domestic scientists are utilizing their knowledge to help farmers increase their earnings in the future. With over 30 specialized laboratories at the university, the main goal is to assist the country in ensuring food security and increasing exports.

One significant breakthrough is the cultivation of saffron, one of the world's most expensive spices, in Kyrgyzstan. Scientists have also developed their own berry seedlings to promote berry farming. Additionally, they can accurately determine what farmers need for organic agriculture and the soil's fertilizer requirements.

In 2021, a saffron cultivation project was launched at the Kyrgyz National Agrarian University led by Professor Abdybek Asanaliyev. The experiment is showing promising results, with saffron thriving in Kyrgyzstan's soil.

Another promising agricultural sector in Kyrgyzstan is berry cultivation. An association of berry growers has been established to advance this idea. However, the quality of planting material has been a challenge, with imported infected seedlings hindering good yields.

To address this, a cloning laboratory has been set up at the university to produce disease-free berry seedlings through plant micropropagation technology. These seedlings offer two key advantages: they are free from infections and adapted to Kyrgyzstan's climate, ensuring good yields.

Moreover, a soil analysis laboratory at the university provides farmers with vital information on soil conditions, vitamin deficiencies, and acidity levels for optimal crop growth. The university is actively engaging with organic farmers, aiming to expand the organic farming sector in the country.

While these efforts are a step in the right direction, more support from authorities is crucial for significant changes in the country's agricultural sector. By applying scientific innovations in practice, farmers can achieve excellent results and contribute to the sector's growth.
