Starting from April 7, 2024, amendments approved by the Eurasian Economic Commission will come into effect regarding the adjustment of requirements of the Technical Regulations of the Customs Union "On the Safety of Meat and Meat Products" (TR CU 034/2013). The amendments pertain to the nutritional information labeling of slaughter products and meat products. These changes are crucial as meat from slaughter animals and slaughter products, including those used as raw materials, naturally vary in protein and fat content.
The amendments introduce permissible limits for deviations in the actual values of nutrient content (nutritional indicators) from those stated on the labeling: protein content in the product should be at least 80 percent of the labeled value, while fat, carbohydrates, and energy value (caloric content) should not exceed 120 percent of the labeled values.
Valentin Tataritsky, the Minister for Technical Regulation of the Eurasian Economic Commission, highlights that these changes aim to address issues related to monitoring nutrient content, taking into account the raw material characteristics and the specifics of the meat processing industry. Additionally, they aim to prevent actions that mislead consumers by inaccurately representing the protein, fat, carbohydrate, and caloric content on the labels.
