Water Levels in Toktogul Reservoir Decrease, Prompting Concerns

in Economy / Kyrgyzstan - by

In the first week of March, the water volume in the Toktogul reservoir decreased by 344.09 million cubic meters, reaching 7.5688 billion. Compared to last year, the levels were higher on March 8th.

Since the beginning of the year, the water level has decreased by 2.86092 billion cubic meters. Despite the current water inflow being similar to last year, at around 158 cubic meters per second, the water outflow for electricity generation remains significantly high.

The water usage for electricity generation is 4.6 times higher than the water inflow, leading to an increased outflow surpassing the 2023 levels. This surge in water usage has resulted in electricity shortages in Kyrgyzstan.

The current low-water period has forced power cuts during peak morning and evening hours due to low water inflow and maintenance work on hydroelectric plants. The hope now lies in a quicker warming of temperatures to reduce electricity consumption for heating. The water levels in the Toktogul reservoir serve as a crucial indicator for potential electricity disruptions in the country.
