Kyrgyz Authorities Uncover Discrepancy in Business Numbers, Combat Shadow Economy

in Economy / Kyrgyzstan - by

A recent monitoring in Jalal-Abad region revealed a significant gap between official data from the State Tax Service and the actual number of businesses operating in the area. According to the General Directorate for Combating Economic Crimes, while 7,077 entities are officially registered and conducting business activities (such as shopping centers, hotels, cafes, hair salons, etc.), a physical count identified 10,132 active businesses in the region. This discrepancy of 3,055 entities, or 30.1%, highlights the extent of the shadow economy in the region.

In response to these findings, a commission has been established by the General Directorate for Combating Economic Crimes, involving relevant state agencies like the Tax Service, sanitary-epidemiological service, architecture, and water and energy supply organizations. The aim of this initiative is to bring entrepreneurs out of the shadow economy by legalizing their businesses and aligning their activities with the current legislation of the Kyrgyz Republic.
