Tajikistan Braces for Natural Disasters: Landslides, Floods, and Rescue Operations

in Environment / Tajikistan - by

Tajikistan has experienced landslides, rockfalls, and mudslides due to heavy rains over the past day. The Emergency Situations Committee (KChS) rescued 9 people in urgent need of assistance during this time.

On May 10th, four residents of the rural jamoat of Guliston in the city of Vahdat attempted to alter the course of the Kofarnikhon River using heavy engineering equipment, fearing damage to their homes. However, they became stranded in the middle of the river due to the rising water levels caused by the heavy rainfall. The specialized Search and Rescue team managed to rescue them and retrieve the equipment from the raging river.

In another incident, a car accident occurred on May 10th at around 15:00 on the 234th kilometer of the Dushanbe-Kulyab-Darvaz-Khorog highway near the village of Khirmandjo. The driver of a Toyota Land Cruiser lost control of the vehicle, resulting in it overturning with five passengers on board. Fortunately, there were no injuries to the driver, and the passengers received preliminary medical assistance.

In the Shohmansur district, flooding from the Karategin River overflowed onto the streets, necessitating the mobilization of 9 units of special road equipment for mitigation efforts. Similarly, in the Varzob GES area, flooding led to the destruction of a pedestrian bridge on Navabad Street.

Efforts to ensure the safety of residents included the temporary evacuation of 105 individuals living near the affected areas. The situation is under control, with ongoing measures to prevent further flooding.

In the Sino district, floodwaters accumulated under a two-story bridge on N. Makhsum Street, prompting a joint effort by the KChS and local authorities to address the situation.

In Firdavsi district, heavy rainfall caused water accumulation in the basement of a house on N. Karabaev Street. Emergency responders used pumps to remove the water from the basement.

Several villages in different jamoats experienced landslides and flooding, resulting in temporary road closures and damage to residential properties. The emergency situations commission will assess the extent of the damage.

Due to landslides and rockfalls on various sections of the Dushanbe-Shohin-Darvaz highway, the road was temporarily closed. However, swift action by road maintenance teams and transport ministry personnel ensured the road was reopened by evening.

In the GBAO region, a landslide blocked a section of the Dushanbe-Darvaz-Khorog highway near the village of Vishkharv. Fortunately, no casualties or significant damage were reported.

Despite the challenges posed by the natural disasters, prompt response and coordinated efforts by emergency services and local authorities have helped mitigate the impact on communities across Tajikistan.
