Tajikistan President Warns Farmers of Drought; Urges New Financing Mechanisms

in Environment / Tajikistan - by

President of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, in his speech at the meeting of the National Development Council on June 10 in Dushanbe, warned farmers about a possible drought. The head of state noted that the ongoing spring rains in 2024 caused significant damage to homes and agriculture. Additionally, each year, agricultural land is taken out of circulation due to environmental and economic factors. Currently, more than 40,000 hectares of land are in unsatisfactory meliorative condition.

This situation creates an additional burden on the state budget. The funds for implementing state investment projects in climate change adaptation, disaster prevention, coastal protection, land reclamation, irrigation, pasture restoration, and other areas are insufficient, according to the President. In this regard, the President of Tajikistan believes it is necessary to develop and implement new financing mechanisms to achieve sustainable results in preventing the negative consequences of natural disasters, reforming land reclamation and irrigation.

To address this, the country's government has adopted the Water Sector Reform Program of the Republic of Tajikistan for 2016-2025 and the "green" economy development strategy for 2023-2037, aimed at overcoming existing problems and sustainable agricultural development.

According to a study by Chinese scientists published in the journal Nature Geoscience, the southern part of Central Asia - Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan - will be most affected in the near future. The main role in this will be played by the interdecadal Pacific oscillation, which, according to researchers, will lead to a reduction in atmospheric precipitation in Central Asia.
