International Conference on Climate Change and Adaptation in Central Asia

in Environment / Uzbekistan - by

The International Conference on Climate Change and Adaptation recently took place in Tashkent, organized by the UNDP office in Uzbekistan in collaboration with the Green Climate Fund and Uzhydromet. The conference aimed to develop a National Adaptation Plan focusing on climate-vulnerable sectors in Uzbekistan. Representatives from various Central Asian countries, governmental and non-governmental organizations, scientific community, and financial institutions attended the event.

Central Asian countries are particularly susceptible to climate change, with the region experiencing significant temperature increases and glacier reduction, impacting water resources, food, and energy security. Uzbekistan is prioritizing a transition to a "green economy" to combat climate change and protect the environment, as outlined in the "Uzbekistan 2030 Strategy."

Discussions at the conference covered topics such as water resources, agriculture, healthcare, and disaster risk reduction in the context of climate change adaptation. The Green Climate Fund offers financial support for countries to develop national adaptation plans and explore innovative financing mechanisms, including private sector involvement.

Recommendations made at the conference highlighted the importance of developing national adaptation plans and increasing public awareness of climate change adaptation measures. Uzbekistan has increased its commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris Agreement, emphasizing the importance of limiting global temperature rise, implementing adaptation strategies, and engaging all parties in these efforts.
