On March 25, 2024, in Astana, a ceremony was held for the signing of an agreement between Kazakhstan and Cyprus on the transfer of convicted persons during the official visit of the Cypriot Foreign Minister to Kazakhstan.
According to the Prosecutor General's Office of Kazakhstan, the agreement was signed by the Prosecutor General of Kazakhstan, Berik Asilov, and the Cypriot Foreign Minister, Konstantinos Kombos.
The international document will allow Kazakh citizens convicted of crimes in Cyprus to serve their sentences in Kazakhstan, creating favorable conditions for their rehabilitation and integration into society. The same opportunity will be granted to Cypriot citizens convicted in Kazakhstan.
The agreements are in line with the requirements of Article 11 of the Constitution of Kazakhstan, which guarantees protection and patronage to its citizens beyond its borders.
In October 2022, Kazakhstan had already signed agreements with Cyprus on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters and on the extradition of individuals.
Cyprus joins the list of European countries with which Kazakhstan has established a solid international legal framework for cooperation in combating crime, ensuring legality and order, as well as protecting the fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens.
Previously, it was reported that the President of Kazakhstan met with the Cypriot Foreign Minister, Konstantinos Kombos, reaffirming Kazakhstan's commitment to developing partnership relations with Cyprus. Over the 32 years of diplomatic relations, Astana and Nicosia have established a strong political dialogue and enhanced investment cooperation.
