Kyrgyz Parliament Elects Melis Turgunbaev as National Bank Chairman

The Jogorku Kenesh unanimously elected Melis Turgunbaev as the Chairman of the National Bank. All 75 parliament deputies present at the session voted in favor of his candidacy. This decision came after President Sadyr Japarov relieved Melis Turgunbaev of his position as Minister of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision earlier today, a role he held since March 2023.

Here is what is known about Melis Turgunbaev:

- He is 42 years old and a graduate of the American University of Central Asia. He holds a Doctorate in Economics and is an Associate Professor. Additionally, he completed the Sloan Master's Program in Leadership and Strategy at the London Business School (2022-2023).

- Work Experience:

- 2002-2006: Ministry of Finance of the Kyrgyz Republic, Senior Specialist.

- 2006-2015: "Gazprom Neft Asia," Head of Market Analysis and Pricing Department.

- 2015-2020: "Gazprom Kyrgyzstan," Branch Director.

- 2013-2021: "Kyrgyzneftegaz," Board Member, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Chairman of the Management Board.

- 2021-2023: "Kyrgyz Investment and Credit Bank," Board Member.

- Since March 15, 2023, he held the position of Minister of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision.

- Melis Turgunbaev was born in the village of Kyzyl-Suu, Kara-Suu district of the Osh region.

- He is married and has four children.
