Kazakhstan ratified the Convention on the Law of Non-Navigational Uses of International Watercourses on March 25. The Head of State signed the law on the ratification of the Convention, according to Akorda. During a plenary session of the Mazhilis, the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, highlighted that the Convention was adopted by the UN General Assembly on May 21, 1997, and came into force on August 17, 2014. Currently, 37 countries are parties to the Convention, with only Uzbekistan being a neighboring country to Kazakhstan.

Nurzhigitov emphasized that the Convention is a global international framework document that takes into account key progressive principles of international water law, intersectoral interaction, water-ecological aspects of international watercourses, and target indicators of sustainable development goals. The Convention serves as a global legal mechanism to promote fair and sustainable management of transboundary rivers and lakes, as well as the associated groundwater worldwide.
