The press service of the Almaty Regional Court provided comments on the release of the well-known political analyst and sinologist, Professor Konstantin Syroezhkin, who was previously convicted of treason. The court mentioned that the private appeal of Konstantin Syroezhkin against the decision of the court of first instance to deny his request for parole had been considered.
Konstantin Syroezhkin was sentenced to 10 years in prison by the verdict of the SMUS of Almaty dated October 7, 2019. During his time in prison, he applied for parole, and the court recently granted his request. The prosecutor supported the request, and the convict's lawyer fully backed the petition.
The court highlighted that Konstantin Syroezhkin had received three commendations and a positive behavior assessment while serving his sentence. At the time of the appellate review, he had four years, five months, and 22 days remaining on his sentence. The convict had paid the procedural costs imposed by the court, had no civil claims against him, and was positively characterized by the institution's administration. He expressed remorse, demonstrated exemplary behavior, diligent work ethic, and active participation in the colony's life, indicating his rehabilitation.
The court decided to grant the convict's request for parole, with probation supervision imposed for the remaining term. This ruling has now come into legal force. Kazakh political analyst Anton Morozov confirmed that Konstantin Syroezhkin, who had been accused of treason, has been released.
Konstantin Syroezhkin, a former chief research fellow at the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies, had a long and distinguished career in various research institutes. He has authored numerous scientific and literary works.
