Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan Extend Stay Period for Citizens, Simplify Registration Rules

in Politics / Kazakhstan - by

Kazakhstan citizens will be able to stay longer in Uzbekistan without registration, as announced by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan. On April 6, 2024, President Tokayev signed a law ratifying the Protocol amending the Agreement between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan on mutual travel conditions dating back to July 7, 2000.

The aim of the law is to establish a legal framework for further development of friendly relations between the two states, regulate the travel of their citizens, and create favorable conditions for citizens to stay in each other's territories. The simplified procedure allows citizens of both countries to stay for up to 30 calendar days without registration if they do not exceed this period after crossing the state border.

This mutual agreement increases the stay period from five to 30 calendar days without temporary registration. If a citizen exceeds the 30-day period, they must obtain permission for temporary residence from the competent authorities of the host country.

President Tokayev visited the Uzbek city of Urgench on April 5, 2024, where he was welcomed by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The two leaders later held an informal meeting to discuss further cooperation and strengthening of bilateral ties between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
