Efforts Underway to Prepare for Second Wave of Floods in Eastern Kazakhstan

in Politics / Kazakhstan - by

A meeting of the regional akimat in Eastern Kazakhstan addressed preparations for the upcoming second wave of floods expected in mid-April. The current situation in the region was reported as stable, thanks to the coordinated efforts of all involved structures. Initiatives for flood prevention have been ongoing since last autumn under the direction of the regional governor Yermek Kosherbayev.

For the first time, a risk map based on historical data has been developed to mitigate potential threats, with continuous updates. Constant monitoring is being conducted in flood-prone areas to ensure the safety of the population. This year has been declared the Year of Roads in Eastern Kazakhstan, with a focus on quality.

Governor Kosherbayev emphasized the need for reliable construction technologies and close collaboration with road patrols to address deteriorating infrastructure due to aging projects. Increased funding for road repairs has been allocated this year, with plans to revamp approximately 600 kilometers of roads.

In a bid for transparency, a comprehensive list of roads slated for repairs will be published on the relevant department's website. Last year, the region initiated the "Aul Amanat" program, granting over 213 loans totaling more than 1.5 billion tenge, resulting in the creation of 235 jobs in rural areas.

This year, the aim is to issue 1,000 loans to support agricultural activities. Governor Kosherbayev stressed the importance of the program as a tool for economic growth, citing successful local enterprises like a dumpling factory in Kurchum district as examples.

Efforts to establish direct-to-consumer platforms, similar to those in Ust-Kamenogorsk, were highlighted as successful models. The governor urged district akims to propose similar initiatives to boost the availability of locally produced goods.

Additionally, Kosherbayev emphasized the need to expand the range of locally made products in stores to promote entrepreneurship among citizens and create more job opportunities in rural areas.

Addressing environmental concerns, the region generates 146.5 thousand tons of municipal waste annually. However, only a small fraction of waste disposal sites meet ecological standards. The governor called for collaboration with environmental activists to develop a strategy for waste management.

Following the akimat meeting, Governor Kosherbayev held a video conference with city and district akims to address flood-related issues and instructed them on healthcare, education, infrastructure, and service improvements for residents.
