The press service of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan responded to the statement made by the plenipotentiary representative of the President of the Russian Federation in the Ural Federal District, Vladimir Yakushev, regarding Kazakhstan's influence on Russian floods.
Yakushev previously stated that in the situation of floods in the Kurgan and Tyumen regions, the factor of Kazakhstan's reservoir system should be taken into account, suggesting that water releases should be more coordinated.
The Kazakh authorities believe that discussing Kazakhstan's impact on Russian floods is inappropriate. They clarified that the water in the Tobol River comes from Russia, and decisions on water releases are made based on the flows on the Russian side. Therefore, attributing the influence on Russian floods to Kazakhstan is inaccurate.
Starting from April 2, the Kazakh side has been informing the Russian side about decisions regarding water releases in the Tobol River. Both sides exchange information around the clock as water releases increase or decrease. The Kazakh side expressed readiness to continue cooperation and information exchange in the spirit of good neighborly partnership with Russia.
The floods in 2024 have been a natural disaster affecting both Kazakhstan and Russia, causing the most significant damage in the past 80 years, according to experts.
