The head of state, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, signed a decree on March 7, 2024, regarding Kazakhstan's membership in the European Commission for Democracy through Law.

According to the decree, Elvira Azimova, the Chairperson of the Constitutional Court of Kazakhstan, has been appointed as a member of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission) representing Kazakhstan, while Azamat Nesipbayevich Eskaraev, the Minister of Justice of Kazakhstan, has been appointed as the Deputy Member of the Commission.

Previously, Igor Rogov and Unzila Shapak represented Kazakhstan in the Venice Commission.

The decree will come into effect on the day of its signing.

The Venice Commission, officially known as the European Commission for Democracy through Law, is an advisory body on constitutional law established by the Council of Europe in 1990. Since 2002, countries outside the Council of Europe can also participate in the Commission's work. Sessions are held in Venice, hence the unofficial name of the Commission.
