Kazakhstan President Discusses Judicial Reforms with Supreme Court Chairman

President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev met with the Chairman of the Supreme Court, Aslambek Mergaliev. During the meeting, the head of state emphasized the special role of courts in ensuring the rule of law and protecting the rights and legitimate interests of citizens and entrepreneurs.

According to a statement from Akorda dated March 13, 2024, Mergaliev mentioned that the analytical block has been strengthened and the third part of the entire array of regulatory acts of the Supreme Court has been adjusted.

Furthermore, the level of protection of citizens' rights during investigations has increased, the rate of refusals to sanction pre-trial detention has risen, the number of cases heard by the court with the participation of jurors has grown, and the proportion of civil disputes resolved through settlements has increased.

It was also noted that information on the progress of judicial reform was presented to the President. In conclusion, the head of state emphasized the need to continue working on further reforming the judicial system.

Earlier reports indicated that Kazakhstan is considering transitioning to a new model of jury trials. According to Deputy Majilis Nikolai Aksyutin, the corresponding norm is included in a bill on the optimization of the Criminal, Criminal Procedure, and Criminal Executive Codes, which was previously approved by deputies in the first reading.
