Kazakhstan Women's Tennis Team Gets New Captain Ahead of Tough Qualifier

in Sport / Kazakhstan - by

The Kazakhstan Tennis Federation has announced a change in leadership for the women's national team, with Yuri Shchukin taking over from Yaroslava Shvedova. Shvedova had been combining the roles of player and captain since February 2020, transitioning to a full-time captaincy in April 2021. Shchukin, who has been the captain of the men's national team since March 2020, previously served as an assistant coach for the women's team.

According to Dias Doskaraev, Vice President of the Kazakhstan Tennis Federation, the change in leadership aims to bring minor adjustments while maintaining continuity within the women's national team. Shchukin will now lead the team, with Shvedova supporting him in a role reversal. Doskaraev expressed hope that this rotation of personnel will contribute to a successful performance in the current season.

The Kazakhstan women's team is gearing up to face a tough opponent in the upcoming qualifiers for the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup on April 12-13. They will be playing away against Japan, a powerhouse in Asian tennis. Last year, the Kazakhstani players competed in the final stage of the tournament in Seville, Spain, alongside Australia and Slovenia. Despite their efforts, they were unable to advance to the semifinals due to the absence of their top player, Elena Rybakina, who was sidelined with an injury.
