In Kyrgyzstan, every third water well is dysfunctional, as reported by the Secretary of the Security Council of the Kyrgyz Republic, Marat Imankulov, at the international conference "Water Resources Deficit in Central Asia: Ways to Solve Water Problems at the Regional and International Levels."
According to him, there are 201 deposits of fresh underground water in Kyrgyzstan with a total estimated reserve of 30,441.4 thousand cubic meters per day. The country has 14,408 water wells, out of which only 3,629 are operational.
Imankulov informed that out of the total water wells, 4,183 are non-functional, 4,384 have not been surveyed, 1,634 are in a preserved state, 377 are reserve wells, and 561 are self-draining wells.
"As we can see, slightly less than 23 percent of water wells are in proper condition. This leads to a deficit of irrigation and drinking water in the country," stated the head of the Security Council.
