Astana and Baku are considering the possibility of increasing the transit of Kazakh oil through Azerbaijan. The Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan announced that the head of the department, Almasadam Satkaliyev, met with the Minister of Energy of Azerbaijan, Parviz Shahbazov. The discussions took place following the 20th meeting of the joint intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation between Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan.
The parties discussed cooperation in the energy sector, the transit of Kazakh oil, and the implementation of large-scale renewable energy projects. In November 2022, an agreement was signed between KazMunayGas and SOCAR for the transit of oil via the Aktau – Baku – Tbilisi – Ceyhan route. Last year, oil shipments from the port of Aktau to Baku – Tbilisi – Ceyhan amounted to 1,057 thousand tons. This year, the delivery of Kazakh oil through Baku – Tbilisi – Ceyhan is planned to reach 1.5 million tons.
Almasadam Satkaliyev stated, "Our national companies are tasked with increasing the volume of oil supplies considering the growth of production in Kazakhstan. In this regard, we plan to increase the volume of Kazakh oil deliveries." The ministers also discussed upcoming work on a project aimed at connecting the energy systems of the Caucasus region and Central Asia by laying a subsea cable along the bottom of the Caspian Sea.
It was previously reported that Kazakhstan and Russia agreed to increase the transit of Russian oil to China to 10 million tons.
