Almaty's Economy Surges in 2023: Record Growth in GRP & Investments

In 2023, the gross regional product of the city of Almaty increased by 10.1% in real terms, reaching 24.8 trillion tenge, marking a record high for the past decade.

The driving forces behind the economic growth were the manufacturing industry (+17.5%), trade (+14.5%), financial and insurance activities (+12.0%), information and communication sector (+11.3%), real estate operations (+6.9%), and transportation and storage (+5.7%).

The development of the metropolis was accompanied by high levels of investment and business activity. In 2023, Almaty attracted 1.8 trillion tenge in capital investments, a 25.3% increase, with private investments growing by 35.5%. Small and medium-sized businesses in the city produced goods worth 19.3 trillion tenge last year, showing a real growth of 15.8%. The number of active business entities reached 340.1 thousand units, a 16.2% increase compared to 2022.

The dynamic economic growth also led to a decrease in the unemployment rate from 5% in 2022 to 4.8% in 2023. Overall, Almaty's contribution to Kazakhstan's gross domestic product increased to 20.6%.
