Kazakhstan Implements Temporary Ban on Metal Scrap Export

in Economy / Kazakhstan - by

The Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development in Kazakhstan has issued a directive regarding the transportation of scrap metal and waste materials. The directive imposes a six-month ban on the export of various materials from Kazakhstan, including copper scrap, aluminum scrap, lead scrap, lead batteries, and others containing lead, cadmium, or mercury.

Additionally, there is a temporary ban on the export of black metal scrap and pig iron ingots for remelting, excluding alloy steel scrap and stainless steel containing 8% or more nickel. The directive also prohibits the export of used pipes, rails, railway track elements, and rolling stock by road and sea transport.

This directive, effective from May 25, 2024, aims to increase the workload of domestic enterprises facing a shortage of scrap metal and combat illegal scrap metal trading. The document is open for public discussion on the "Open Regulatory Acts" website until March 29.

Earlier reports mentioned restrictions on the export of black metal scrap and waste materials by rail transport in Kazakhstan starting from February 21, 2024. The measures are part of the country's efforts to regulate the metal scrap market and promote the growth of local industries.
