The official representative of the East Kazakhstan region, Elzhan Kairkenov, announced at a briefing that a new flood wave is expected in the region by mid-April. According to the Crisis and Situational Center, the upcoming floods are anticipated due to a high snow cover and moisture reserves in the mountainous areas, air temperatures, and precipitation forecasts. There is a particular risk of water levels rising in mountain rivers.
Currently, the snow cover in the region is at 48%, and aerial inspections are regularly conducted to monitor the flood situation. 132 hydraulic structures in the region are operating normally, with water levels being preemptively lowered on dams, as stated by Kairkenov.
Earlier on April 14, Alina Ismagulova, the press secretary of "Kazhydromet," mentioned that the risk of a second flood wave is expected in three regions – North Kazakhstan, West Kazakhstan, and Atyrau regions. According to meteorologists, rainy weather is forecasted for most of Kazakhstan on April 15, with thunderstorms, fog, and strong winds expected, reaching gale force in the south.
The Ministry of Emergency Situations reported evacuating over 108,000 people, including 38,706 children, from flooded areas in Kazakhstan. Currently, 11,950 individuals have returned home. More than 9.4 million cubic meters of meltwater have been pumped out, over 2 million sandbags and 1.2 million tons of inert material have been deployed. The hotline received 1714 calls, and emergency psychological assistance was provided to 126 individuals.
