Kazakhstan to Redirect Floodwater into Caspian Sea with New Canals

in Environment / Kazakhstan - by

The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan announced on April 15, 2024, that 14.5 km of additional canals are being dug in Atyrau to redirect floodwater into the Caspian Sea.

The canals, with a depth of 2 meters and a width of over 7 meters, are being constructed by the "Kazvodkhoz" branch in the Atyrau region in collaboration with the local akimat to divert floodwater from the Zhaiyk River into the Caspian Sea. This initiative aims to reduce the volume of water passing through Atyrau.

The Ministry highlighted that four main canals of "Kazvodkhoz" - Sokolok, Saryozek, Baksay, and Naryn - receive water in the Atyrau region, which is then directed towards the Caspian Sea. Preparation is underway to receive water from the Sakmara River and the Iriklin Reservoir in Russia, expected to arrive by late April or early May.

Meanwhile, prominent public figure Azamat Sarsenbayev shared a video with followers showing a flooded area in the Atyrau region, emphasizing the impact of the worst floods in Kazakhstan in the last 80 years.
