Threat of Flooding Persists in West Kazakhstan Region

in Environment / Kazakhstan - by

The threat of flooding in the West Kazakhstan region remains a concern, according to Deputy Akim Kaliyar Aitmuhametov, who provided an update on April 18 at the Crisis Center. Efforts to safeguard settlements along the Zhaiyk River are in progress, with the construction of dams spanning 102 kilometers and reaching heights of 2-4.5 meters. Around 800,000 sandbags have been deployed.

Despite stabilization in the region, the deputy akim highlighted that the risk persists. Eight out of the 12 districts and the city of Uralsk are still vulnerable to flooding from the Ural River and its tributaries Sakmara, Ilek, and Chingirlau. Four districts - Akzhaiyk, Burlin, Bayterek, Terecty - are at high risk, encompassing 84 settlements and over 80,000 residents near Uralsk and the Zhaiyk River.

The floodwaters have started to impact the region, including the hydroelectric facility in Yanvartsevo village, with expectations of reaching Uralsk between April 19-20, as mentioned by the deputy akim. Moldir Abdualieva, the official representative of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, provided an update on the reservoirs during a briefing at the Crisis Center on April 17.
