River Water Levels Rising in Atyrau Region, Preparations Underway for Potential Flooding

in Environment / Kazakhstan - by

According to the Operational Headquarters of the Atyrau Region, the water level in the Zhaiyk River, adjacent to Atyrau, has reached 409 cm. Specialists are monitoring the river's level, flow, depth, and width, calculating the volume of water entering per second. This data is transmitted to the Kazhydromet center to compile a hydrogeological bulletin.

Engineer-hydrologist Lyudmila Pridanovaya stated that a significant amount of water is expected in May. The Ural River has risen two meters above its usual level, with water levels expected to peak in early May before entering floodplains, reducing water velocity.

Comparatively, during the 2023 spring flood in Atyrau, the Zhaiyk River reached 440 cm. Ongoing riverbank reinforcement works are being carried out in Atyrau due to the rising Zhaiyk River and increased water discharge from the Irtysh Reservoir. Plans include constructing 238 km of dams to protect the city from floods, with 203 km completed as of April 20.
