Dam in Uralsk Cracks Due to Flooding, Residents Concerned

in Environment / Kazakhstan - by

In Uralsk, a reinforced dam in the Kurenei area has cracked, as reported by a local portal. The dam was initially built a long time ago and was reinforced with soil due to floods and a rapid rise in water levels. Currently, local residents have observed a crack in the middle of the dam, which is being filled with soil.

The official representative of the Emergency Situations Department of West Kazakhstan Oblast, Nurzhan Toleush, was unable to determine the cause of the dam deformation during a briefing and promised to investigate, as noted by the publication.

A resident of Kurenei complained about the dam, expressing concerns about the impact on the environment and health of the residents. The resident mentioned that the lime used to fill the dam has covered their plantings in white dust, making it difficult to breathe. The resident highlighted that many people living nearby are pensioners and children, and there has never been any flooding in the area, questioning the necessity of the dam construction.

Earlier, meteorologists had provided a water level forecast for the Ural River.
