New "Kazhydrogeology" Service Established to Manage Kazakhstan's Water Resources

National Hydrogeological Service "Kazhydrogeology" has been established in Kazakhstan. The corresponding government decree was signed by Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov, as reported by.

As stated in the government's announcement for April 30, 2024, the new service will conduct a comprehensive inventory of deposits and areas of underground water, as well as water intake hydrogeological wells.

In addition, "Kazhydrogeology" will engage in the comprehensive digitization of the hydrogeological industry with the implementation of an automated groundwater monitoring system.

"As part of the activities of the new service, it is also planned to carry out exploration work to increase the volumes of available underground water resources in water-deficient regions of Kazakhstan. At the same time, work will be carried out on a permanent basis to provide the population and economic sectors with underground water, including for irrigation purposes," the official statement said.

Among the plans highlighted by specialists is the licensing of activities related to the search, exploration of underground water, drilling of hydrogeological wells, as well as practical work on the use of geothermal resources of underground water (an alternative source of energy) for the needs of heat and power engineering, greenhouse farming, and fish farming.

"The outlined measures will effectively address management tasks in the field of water management at all levels," concluded the press service.

The plans to establish the service were announced in early April 2024. Additionally, on February 12, it was reported that a new Water Code has been developed for the country.
