Kazakhstan has become a participant in the Global Carbon Pricing Coalition (GCPC), whose goal is to cover 60% of global carbon emissions with a pricing system by 2030.
According to the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, GCPC is an initiative at the leaders' level, announced by Canada during the 2021 UN Climate Change Conference, aligning economic goals with targets for reducing carbon emissions.
"Kazakhstan's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting eco-friendly technologies through our Emissions Trading System (ETS) is evidence of our proactive approach to combating global climate change. By joining the Global Carbon Pricing Initiative, we aim to strengthen our national ETS system, aligning with our decarbonization goals and promoting sustainable development for future generations," said Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Kazakhstan, Erlan Nysanbayev.
The Chair of the GCPC Advisory Committee and Canada's Ambassador for Climate Change, Catherine Stewart, expressed her delight in welcoming Kazakhstan as a partner in the Global Initiative.
She noted that carbon pricing is most effective when adopted by more countries, as broader coverage provides more opportunities to find clean solutions.
It was previously reported that Kazakhstan aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 15% by 2030.
