Kazakhstan Reports 8% Surge in Waste Collection Volume in 2023

According to reports, the total volume of waste collected in Kazakhstan has increased by 8% over the year, reaching 4.1 million tons by the end of 2023.

The National Statistics Bureau of the Republic reports that the majority of municipal waste consisted of various categories including street cleaning waste, paper and cardboard waste, market waste, plastic materials, food waste, glass waste, metals, clothing and textiles, and electronic and electrical equipment. Other mixed waste accounted for a significant portion of the total volume.

In 2023, the volume of sorted waste amounted to 1.3 million tons, showing a 6.8% increase compared to the previous year.

At a regional level, the highest amount of waste was sorted in Almaty, followed by Astana and the Karaganda region.

In 2023, there were 808 companies in Kazakhstan engaged in the collection and disposal of municipal waste, with a significant number of organizations focusing on sorting, utilization, and landfilling of waste.

In early April, Kazakhstan approved a new standard for waste collection and disposal.
