Kyrgyz Court Allows Bektyr Asanov to Leave Country for Medical Treatment

in Politics / Kyrgyzstan - by

The Pervomaisky District Court has granted Bektyr Asanov permission to travel abroad for medical treatment until April 19. This decision comes after the Bishkek City Court changed Asanov's pre-trial restriction to a travel ban due to health reasons. Asanov slipped in the shower on December 4, 2023, and subsequently experienced neck pain. After an MRI on December 14, he was hospitalized, operated on, and transferred to a medical facility in Moldovanovka village.

In a separate development, the Kempe-Artyk reservoir support committee was formed on October 22, 2022, comprising activists, politicians, and parliament members. Following this, mass arrests began on October 23, with 27 individuals detained on charges related to inciting mass disorder. Currently, 10 people remain in custody.

International human rights organizations such as the International Partnership for Human Rights (IPHR), the World Organization Against Torture (OMCT), the Norwegian Helsinki Committee (NHC), the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights (HFHR), "Freedom Now," and others have repeatedly called for the release of detained politicians and activists in Kyrgyzstan.
