Rosatom to Begin Construction of Wind Farm in Kyrgyzstan in Q1 2025

In the first quarter of 2025, Rosatom will start building a wind farm in Kyrgyzstan, as announced by Dmitry Konstantinov, the general director of Rosatom's representative office in Kyrgyzstan, at the XIII Atomexpo forum today.

According to Konstantinov, the agreement signed today for cooperation in renewable energy projects is a continuation of their previous work. Currently, Rosatom is implementing a pilot project to construct a 100-megawatt wind power plant in the Issyk-Kul region.

The project is located in the Tonsky district, Kok-Moinok-1. Site investigations have been conducted, and a wind measuring mast has been installed. By the end of the year, Rosatom will complete the project documentation and will be ready to commence construction in early 2025.

Additionally, an agreement for a 1-gigawatt project is in line with this work. Rosatom has identified sites in the Batken region where a station with a capacity of up to 80 megawatts is planned. There is also a site in the Naryn region.

Despite Kyrgyzstan not being the windiest country, there is still wind present. Rosatom is prepared to construct renewable energy projects in the country. It is important to note that Kyrgyzstan faces an electricity shortage, requiring projects to be implemented promptly. Wind and solar projects are fast and have minimal impact on the environment.

Konstantinov emphasized that these projects are complementary, not the foundation of the energy system. The main sources remain thermal, nuclear, and gas energy. However, work on enhancing the energy system is ongoing. Therefore, Rosatom is also collaborating with the Kyrgyz Ministry of Energy on a nuclear power plant project, which is deemed necessary for Kyrgyzstan's energy needs.
