Kyrgyz Court Rejects Appeals of Journalists' Detention, Extends Arrests Until May 13

The Bishkek City Court has rejected the appeals regarding the detention measures of journalists Joodar Buzumov and Mahabat Tajibek kyzy. Bolot Temirov announced this on his Tekegram channel. The journalists will remain in pre-trial detention until May 13.

Earlier, the judicial panel of the Bishkek City Court dismissed the appeals of Tynystan Asypbekov, Maxat Tajibek uulu, Azamat Ishenbekov, and Ayke Beyshekeeva. It is worth noting that the court extended the arrest of eight detained journalists until May 13, including Mahabat Tajibek kyzy, Ayke Beyshekeeva, Aktilek Kaparov, Joodar Buzumov, Azamat Ishenbekov, Saipidin Sultanaliyev, Maxat Tajibek uulu, and Tynystan Asypbekov.

On January 16, the Ministry of Internal Affairs conducted a search in the office of Temirov Live, seizing editorial equipment. The police searched homes and detained 11 current and former employees of the publication. The Ministry of Internal Affairs stated that a criminal case under Article 278 of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic, "Incitement to Mass Disorder," was initiated following a "judicial-linguistic expertise" of the content on the pages of Temirov Live and "Ait Ait Dese" on social media on December 30, 2023.

Those detained included Mahabat Tajibek kyzy, Sapar Akunbekov, Azamat Ishenbekov, Saipidin Sultanaliyev, Aktilek Kaparov, Tynystan Asypbekov, Maxat Tajibek uulu, Joodar Buzumov, Zumabek Turdaliyev, Ayke Beyshekeeva, and Akyl Orozbekov, all former or current employees of Temirov Live. All 11 detained journalists were remanded in custody for two months until March 13, after being held in temporary detention facilities for almost two weeks without being transferred to pre-trial detention.
