Media Action Platform in Kyrgyzstan Calls for Immediate Release of Detained Journalists

in Politics / Kyrgyzstan - by

The media action platform in Kyrgyzstan is advocating for the immediate release of detained investigative journalists under house arrest or travel restrictions. The platform members express deep concern over the continued detention of eight journalists who have been in pre-trial detention for three months.

These journalists are accused of inciting mass disorder without legal basis. Despite the President's intention to release most detainees, 8 out of 11 individuals remain behind bars.

The platform emphasizes that journalism is not a crime and journalists are not political actors aiming to destabilize the country. Their work focuses on shedding light on societal issues, fighting corruption, and increasing transparency in government operations.

The platform insists on an objective and impartial investigation, highlighting the danger of persecuting journalists for carrying out their professional duties.

Freedom of speech and independent journalism are crucial pillars of a democratic society. Persecuting journalists for their work sets a dangerous precedent with serious consequences for Kyrgyzstan's development and future.

The court extended the arrest of eight journalists until May 13. On January 16, the Ministry of Internal Affairs conducted a search at Temirov Live's office, leading to the detention of 11 current and former employees.

The Ministry stated that a criminal case was initiated based on calls for mass disorder found on Temirov Live and "Ait Ait Dese" social media pages. The detained journalists were held in custody for almost two weeks before being transferred to pre-trial detention.
