Minister of Energy Faces Scrutiny Over Power Outages and Tariffs in Kyrgyzstan

in Politics / Kyrgyzstan - by

During a session of the Zhogorku Kenesh, deputy Tazabek Ikramov raised concerns about recent power outages and high tariffs under the current Minister of Energy, Akylbek Japarov. Ikramov questioned whether the minister would take responsibility for the issues and potentially step down from his position.

Japarov responded by stating that if any official's wrongdoing is proven, they will be dismissed. He also addressed the ongoing low water levels at the Toktogul Reservoir, assuring that the situation is being addressed and water levels are expected to normalize next year.

The Prime Minister highlighted the challenges faced by the country in terms of electricity generation, noting the need for importing a significant amount of electricity due to insufficient domestic power generation capacity. He emphasized that funds are being allocated for the maintenance of hydroelectric power plants, with a substantial budget dedicated to equipment repairs in 2023.

Ikramov further raised concerns about sudden power cuts causing damage to citizens' appliances, especially those purchased on credit. He questioned who would be held accountable for such damages and the inconvenience caused to the population.

In response, the Prime Minister urged the relevant ministry to provide advance notice to the public regarding any planned electricity outages, aiming to minimize disruptions and ensure citizens are adequately informed.
