Kyrgyz Parliament Member Questions Energy Usage by Mining Farms

in Politics / Kyrgyzstan - by

During a parliament session, Deputy Elvira Surabaldieva questioned the Minister of Energy on why mining farms continue to operate during an electricity shortage in the country.

The Minister responded that these farms use imported electricity from Kazakhstan. Despite previous statements about halting mining farm operations in case of an electricity deficit, the Minister claimed there was no shortage.

Surabaldieva insisted that all mining farms should cease activities during deficits. The Minister explained that mining farms are private businesses and cannot be obstructed. He clarified that Kyrgyzstan only has one officially operating mining farm, despite reports of 22 active farms online. Lawmaker Marat Murataliev suggested shutting down all mining farms, questioning their benefit to the country.
