Closure of Soros Foundation Office in Kyrgyzstan: Official Statement

in Politics / Kyrgyzstan - by

A high-ranking official from the president's administration commented on the closure of the Soros Foundation office in Kyrgyzstan. According to him, the organization's closure was long known to the staff and many activists. The reference to recent amendments adopted by the Jogorku Kenesh in justifying the decision was met with bewilderment in the administration.

It was known that in recent years, George Soros' family and circle have been revising their approaches to their activities, closing offices in all other Central Asian countries and across Eastern Europe, except for Ukraine and Georgia. Many regional projects have been significantly reduced or completely shut down.

The official highlighted the significant contribution of the Soros Foundation in Kyrgyzstan to strengthening the rule of law and developing civil society in the country over the first 30 years of independence. Particularly noted was the foundation's support in the educational sector and the development of humanitarian sciences in the country.

The official expressed hope for continued constructive cooperation with the Open Society Institute system in the future.
