The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) spokesperson, Irina Volk, announced that temporary asylum in Russia will be granted to Askar Kubanychbek, a citizen of Kyrgyzstan who was convicted in his homeland for mercenary activities related to his involvement in a Special Military Operation (SMO). The news was shared through Irina Volk's official Telegram channel.

According to Volk, the General Administration for Migration Issues of the Russian MVD confirmed that Askar Kubanychbek submitted his asylum application documents on April 18 for temporary refuge within Russian territory. Volk mentioned that if the necessary grounds are met, the question of granting him citizenship of the Russian Federation will be considered.

It was highlighted that Askar Kubanychbek had been residing in Russia prior to his involvement in the SMO and was employed in the film industry. In 2022, he volunteered to participate in the conflict zone. Upon returning to Kyrgyzstan due to his father's illness, he faced criminal prosecution and was charged with mercenary activities.

Previously, reports emerged that Askar Kubanychbek, who was convicted for his participation in the war in Ukraine, received support in Russia. The Human Rights Council under the President of Russia prepared an initiative suggesting that law enforcement agencies refrain from extraditing individuals involved in armed conflicts to countries where they may face criminal charges.

Askar Kubanychbek had requested Russian citizenship. In January, he was released from serving his sentence for his involvement in the war in Ukraine and placed under probation supervision for three years. This decision was made by the Pervomaysky District Court of Bishkek.
