Parents who are on state support and are in need of financial assistance, and who are left to fend for themselves, may face fines, community service, or imprisonment for up to nine months for failing to pay alimony. This is according to a bill that has been approved in the first reading by the committee of the Jogorku Kenesh on constitutional legislation, state structure, judicial and legal issues, and regulations.
The penalties will apply only to adult, able-bodied children who are required to pay alimony to their parents based on a court decision.
The same bill, introduced by deputy Tazabek Ikramov, also proposes to empower local authorities to issue powers of attorney to represent the interests of non-self-sufficient parents in need of material assistance in court to collect alimony.
