In an interview with Tazabek, US Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan Leslie Vigery stated that they frequently reach out to Kyrgyz authorities proactively when they receive information. Vigery mentioned that upon discovering Kyrgyz companies involved in re-exporting, US authorities warn the Kyrgyz government and suggest taking action against these companies. Two companies identified in July 2023 have already been legally liquidated, a move welcomed by Vigery as it aligns with their goal of removing intermediary businesses, many of which are reportedly set up by Russians post-February 2022.
Vigery expressed expectations for the Kyrgyz government to address these issues, noting the establishment of an interdepartmental structure to scrutinize such transactions. In addition to ongoing training initiatives, Vigery emphasized the importance of informing government officials, particularly in the financial and other economic sectors, about their concerns regarding specific transactions that should raise red flags.
The Ambassador clarified that the objective is not to penalize Kyrgyz companies but to prevent the re-export of specific goods. He dispelled the misconception that the US aims to sever Kyrgyzstan's economic ties with Russia, emphasizing that it would be absurd to make such a request. Vigery's proactive approach highlights the collaborative efforts between the US and Kyrgyzstan to address economic concerns and promote transparency in trade practices.
