International Outcry Over Arrests in Kyrgyzstan's Kembirovabad Case

in Politics / Kyrgyzstan - by

A court session was held at the Pervomaisky District Court regarding the Kembirovabad case. Due to illness, the defense lawyer representing three of the accused did not attend. Despite this, the court decided to proceed with the case in the absence of the lawyer as the trial was at the stage of presenting the charges.

However, the accused individuals disrupted the court session and refused to comply with the judge's orders. As a result, based on Article 307 of the Criminal Procedure Code, the presiding judge ordered the removal of the accused from the courtroom. The trial was postponed after the lawyer's absence and the removal of her client.

On October 22, 2022, a support committee for the Kembirovabad reservoir was established, consisting of activists, politicians, and parliament members. Subsequently, mass arrests began on October 23, with 27 individuals detained on charges of inciting mass unrest. Currently, 10 individuals remain in custody.

Several international human rights organizations, including the International Partnership for Human Rights (IPHR), the World Organization Against Torture (OMCT), the Norwegian Helsinki Committee (NHC), the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights (HFHR), Freedom Now, and others, have repeatedly called for the release of the detained politicians and activists in Kyrgyzstan.
