Tourism in Tajikistan: Recovery After Pandemic and Growth in Tourist Numbers

in Economy / Tajikistan - by

The Tajikistan government's Tourism Committee revealed the number of tourists visiting the country over the past 7 years and their financial contribution. Despite a stable growth in visits from 2017 to 2019, the pandemic in 2020 led to a significant decrease in both tourist numbers and tourism revenue.

However, in the following years, a gradual recovery of the industry began. By 2023, interest in Tajikistan as a tourist destination had increased again. A comparison of the agency's data for 2022 and 2023 shows that the number of tourists has grown by more than 20%.

It was also noted that last year, on average, one tourist spent around $300 in Tajikistan.

The number of foreign citizens crossing Tajikistan's borders (both entry and exit) is not limited to tourists alone. Here are the figures for the number of people crossing the border in the specified years (in thousands):

As previously reported, Tajikistan has been implementing a Tourism Development Strategy until 2030 for the sixth year. The strategy consists of three stages: accelerated development phase (2019-2022), completion of accelerated industrialization (2023-2026), and capacity building for development based on knowledge and innovation (2027-2030).

Since the beginning of 2023, the second stage of the Strategy, which will continue until 2026, has theoretically begun. This phase will focus on accelerating the industrialization of the tourism sector, strengthening the human resource capacity of the tourism sector, presenting tourism resources as a national brand, information support for the tourism sector, and marketing.

Moreover, promoting tourism products through participation in international exhibitions, developing tourism products and services in priority areas will also be emphasized during this phase.
