The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is providing funds for the modernization of key infrastructure and the development of sustainable transport solutions in the capital of Tajikistan.
This marks the third project under the Green City Action Plan (GCAP) in Dushanbe.
A sovereign loan from EBRD amounting to up to 28.45 million euros will help finance improvements to the transport system in the coastal part of the capital. This includes the reconstruction of roads and a bridge across the Varzob River.
The Bank's funds will also be used for the construction of dedicated bus and trolleybus lanes, as well as specialized zones for pedestrians, cyclists, and electric vehicles.
"We are very pleased to sign this project with the authorities of Dushanbe. They have been committed to the green agenda since the city joined the EBRD's Green Cities Program in 2019," said EBRD President Odile Renaud-Basso.
The GCAP Dushanbe program, developed in collaboration with EBRD, is helping Tajikistan's largest city with a population of over 800,000 people to identify and address priority environmental issues and determine development directions.
The investments will contribute to a strategic shift from traditional carbon-intensive transport models to principles of environmentally friendly and sustainable mobility.
Upon completion of the project, annual carbon dioxide emissions in the city of Dushanbe will be reduced by 37%, making the capital of Tajikistan more environmentally friendly.
To date, EBRD has invested 947 million euros in 168 projects in Tajikistan.
