Tajikistan's Electricity Exports Reach $7.2 Million in First Quarter of 2024

in Economy / Tajikistan - by

Tajikistan exported electricity worth around $7.2 million in the first quarter of 2024, as reported by the country's statistical agency. The revenue from January shipments exceeded $2.4 million, around $2.8 million in February, and approximately $2 million in March.

The country has agreements for electricity supplies in 2024 with only two countries - Afghanistan and Uzbekistan. According to OJSC "Barki Tojik," electricity exports to Uzbekistan occur only in the summer period, while supplies to Afghanistan will continue in the autumn-winter season, albeit in small volumes "exclusively for infrastructure safety."

During the cold seasons when Tajikistan faces electricity shortages, exports to Afghanistan are reduced by 10 times, from 400 MW to 40 MW. In the past autumn-winter period, Tajikistan experienced severe restrictions on electricity access, despite distribution company representatives denying any limited supply.

Limited electricity supply to rural areas, where 70% of the country's population resides, began in early autumn-winter from September 20. Initially, people received electricity for 3 hours in the morning and 5-6 hours in the evening. By the end of February, the situation worsened, with consumers sometimes left without power for days. Urban residents, including those in the capital, also faced power cuts.
