Iran Prepares Ground for Electricity Exchange with Central Asian Neighbors

in Economy / Tajikistan - by

Iran's Energy Minister Ali-Akbar Mehrabian announced that the country is ready for electricity exchange with Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Mehrabian highlighted the cooperation between Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan in the field of electricity exchange.

Uzbekistan's energy system currently operates in parallel with Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan within the Unified Power System of Central Asia. Turkmenistan left this system in 2003 due to Uzbekistan's refusal to transit Turkmen electricity. Uzbekistan unilaterally withdrew from the system after a major accident in Tajikistan's energy system in November 2009, which also excluded Tajikistan.

With the financial support of the Asian Development Bank since 2019, Tajikistan is working on rejoining the unified energy ring of Central Asia. Despite intentions announced by Tajikistan's Ministry of Energy to join the regional system by the end of 2023, it has not yet materialized. Tajik electricity has been supplied to certain areas of the Surkhandarya region in an autonomous mode since 2018. Tajikistan faces a seasonal electricity deficit, experiencing acute shortages in the autumn-winter period and having excess electricity in the spring-summer period.
