Wage Arrears in Tajikistan Reach $2.5 Million, Mining Sector Most Affected

Overall wage arrears in Tajikistan, including previous years, amounted to approximately 27.6 million somoni (over $2.5 million) as of the beginning of March this year, according to the country's statistical agency.

The highest wage arrears were recorded in the mining sector - around 15 million somoni (54.3% of the total arrears).

Comparatively significant debts for labor payment are also present in water supply, sanitation, waste treatment, and recycling sector (over 3.2 million somoni), construction (over 1.5 million somoni), and manufacturing industry (690 thousand somoni).

Regionally, the highest wage arrears were observed in the Sughd region - over 19.6 million somoni, accounting for 71% of the total national arrears.

Employers in the capital owed over 4.6 million somoni, in the Regions of Republican Subordination (RRP) - around 2.3 million somoni, in the Khatlon region - more than 963 thousand somoni, and in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) - over 113 thousand somoni.

Meanwhile, the average nominal monthly wage in Tajikistan, based on statistical data, was 2150 somoni ($197) in February of this year.

Employees in banks and insurance companies in the republic receive relatively higher wages, with an average salary of 5453 somoni (about $500). The lowest wages remain in the agricultural sector - just over 935 somoni (around $86).
