In recent years, Tajikistan has seen a significant increase in the number of vehicles. However, the country still lags behind its neighbors in terms of the number of passenger cars per capita. The Ministry of Transport of the Republic of Tajikistan has published several statistical data on the number of vehicles in the country.

As of March 1, 2024, the country had registered 666,074 units of vehicles of all types. This number was 601,136 a year ago and 38,939 units 10 years ago in 2014. The Ministry also provided a figure for passenger cars, with 562,000 cars currently registered in the country.

The Ministry did not compare this figure with the previous year's or 10 years ago, but instead referenced the number for 1991 when there were 216,000 passenger cars in the country. Additionally, according to the Ministry's data, the import of electric vehicles is increasing, with around 1,500 electric cars imported into the country in 2023. The goal is to increase the share of this type of transport to 20-30%.

According to the World Bank, Tajikistan ranks 154th in the world and last among the CIS countries in terms of the number of vehicles per capita, with 55 cars per 1,000 people. Alternatively, using another measurement, only every 18th resident of Tajikistan owns a car.

For comparison, some statistics from neighboring countries are as follows: Russia has 395 cars per 1,000 people, Kazakhstan has 226, Kyrgyzstan has 201, Turkmenistan has 102, and Uzbekistan has 87.

Tajikistan is making strides in its transportation sector, with a focus on increasing the number of electric vehicles and catching up with its neighbors in terms of vehicle ownership per capita.
