A series of modernist buildings have been included in the National Register of Cultural Heritage Properties of Uzbekistan. The initiative was announced by the press service of the Fund for the Development of Culture and Art of Uzbekistan.
Changes and additions were made to the list by a resolution of the government of Uzbekistan dated April 22. The document aims to oversee the preservation and use of the cultural heritage of the modernist era, which is considered the national heritage of the Uzbek people.
The initial list, approved by the Cabinet of Ministers' resolution No. 846 of October 4, 2019, includes 10 new properties and updates the status of 10 existing ones. The list is expected to expand further.
Among the new cultural heritage sites in Tashkent and the Tashkent region are the Sun Institute, Uzbekistan Hotel, State Museum of Arts, Tashkent TV Center building, the iconic blue domes of the Eski Juva market, Shodlik Hotel including the Ilkhom Theater building, and more.
Additionally, the status of several properties has been upgraded to modernist heritage sites, including the Pearl residential complex, the Palace of Arts named after Alisher Navoi, Tashkent State Circus, Palace of Friendship of Peoples, and others.
The Fund for the Development of Culture and Art mentioned that they are preparing a nomination for these modernist buildings to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Based on the government's resolution, the Cultural Heritage Agency, in collaboration with the Cadastral Agency under the Ministry of Economy and Finance and regional authorities, will include modernist era properties in the state cadastre.
In late March, the government added around 160 mosaic panels on buildings in Tashkent and the country's regions to the National Register of Cultural Heritage Properties.
