Bishkek Municipal Employees Restricted from Driving to Work - Mayor's Directive

in Society / Kyrgyzstan - by

Today is Thursday, May 16, which means that municipal employees of Bishkek are not allowed to come to work in their personal cars. A journalist observed outside the city hall, witnessing how the mayor's directive was being followed by the city officials.

Earlier this week, the mayor of the capital, Aibek Junushaliev, prohibited his subordinates from using their personal vehicles on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Many employees were seen walking to work today or being dropped off. The new vice-mayor of the city, Ramiz Aliev, who recently headed the Municipal Enterprise "Tazalyk," arrived at work on a scooter.

The press secretary of the city hall, Nazgul Zhamgyrchyieva, shared that she took the bus to work today and even posted a photo taken on public transport.

Officials explained that the mayor's initiative is beneficial because municipal workers, by using public transport, can personally witness more of the city's issues. This exposure will likely help them respond better to and address these shortcomings.

Our journalist also noticed an employee of the Bishkek City Council who arrived at work in their personal car. However, as clarified by the municipality, the employees of the City Council are not obliged to comply with the mayor's orders.
